What This Algorithm Does
This algorithm inserts an edge piece into the middle layer in its correct position and orientation. This is the second step of the Layer-by-Layer method, after completing the first layer corners.
Recognition Guide
How to use this algorithm:
- Find an edge piece that belongs in the middle layer
- Position it in the top layer, aligned with its target position
- Make sure the top color of the edge doesn't match the top face color
- Execute the algorithm to insert it into the middle layer
Cube Orientation: Hold the cube with the solved first layer on the bottom.
For Kids 👶
Now that you've finished the bottom layer corners, it's time to fill in the middle layer! This algorithm helps you put the edge pieces (the ones with two colors) into the middle layer.
Find an edge piece that belongs in the middle. Move it to the top layer, then do the moves: Up, Right, Up-back, Right-back, Up-back, Front-back, Up, Front.
This will slide the edge piece into the middle layer in the right spot! Do this for all four middle layer edges.
For Adults ⚡
The middle layer edges algorithm is a fundamental insertion algorithm. It uses a sequence that moves an edge from the top layer into the middle layer while preserving the solved first layer.
Algorithm: U R U' R' U' F' U F
Execution: This algorithm uses a combination of top layer and front face moves. The sequence creates a 3-cycle that inserts the edge while maintaining the solved first layer.
Key Concept: This teaches the important principle of preserving solved layers while inserting new pieces - a concept that carries forward to F2L in CFOP.

Common Mistakes
- Wrong edge: Make sure the edge piece actually belongs in the middle layer.
- Breaking first layer: Be careful not to rotate the cube in a way that messes up the solved bottom layer.
- Wrong orientation: The edge needs to be positioned correctly in the top layer before starting.
- Rushing: Take your time to understand how each move affects the edge piece.
